The origin of this Trust dates back to 1960 when a group of devotees at Perambur joined together with a view to create an Ayyappa temple for their locality. In 1987, the Perambur Sree Ayyappa Trust was formally formed as a registered trust, with its main objective as various charitable activities.
The ‘temple’ was originally housed in a small shed on the side of the road at Rama Chandra Iyer Street. It was in 1998, following a long struggle by the original group of devotees and members of the Trust, a struggle through which this group formed an impenetrable bond and persevered with a tremendous amount of focus and determination, that their dream of creating a temple was finally realized and the present Perambur Sree Ayyappa temple was consecrated by Sabrimala Tantri Brahmashri Maheshwararu.
Once the temple was created, the focus of the Trust was centered on temple setup, improving its facilities and various temple-linked activities. However, from the year 2003, the members of the Trust turned their focus to contemplating how the temple could benefit the society, apart from being a place of worship.
~ The first development to be born out of this shift in focus was the ‘Nithya Annadhanam’. As part of this Annadhanam,
The Trust serves a hearty meal to nearly 200-250 people every single day in a dining hall built by the Trust for this purpose.
People come from every walk of life, without facing distinction or discrimination on any basis, to partake in this meal.
~ The Trust also donates pre-stitched uniforms, school bags etc. to more than 650 school-going children of Perumbur, on an annual basis.
~ By 2010, the members of the Trust started considering ways in which they could help the senior citizens of the society who are in need of support.
The original thinking of the Trust developed into a more concrete idea of creating senior citizens home, ‘Shasthaalayam’. In 2015, the Trust acquired a property adjacent to its office in order to build the necessary infrastructure for Shasthaalayam.
At Shasthaalayam, the Trust aspires to meet all the needs of the senior citizens who are housed there, including food, clothing, living space and complete medical support. While this is a tremendous responsibility, we are confident that the society will come forward and support us in this venture.
